The Associated Press is reporting that several of the environmental extremists that were arrested Saturday at Massey Energy’s Marfork Coal operation in Pettus, West Virginia remain in prison, unable to post the $2,000 bail for each of the participants arrested on trespassing charges.

The people that were arrested on Saturday are members of a group called Climate Ground Zero. I did some research on the group and found a blog that the organization uses to communicate with fellow extremists. Please watch the video below to see how extreme these people are in their tactics.

According to Climate Ground Zero’s website the three main organizers of the group are Brian Staszenski, James “JR” Roof, and Randy Hayes. After an extensive search of the Internet, I came to the conclusion that NONE of these men have connections to West Virginia.

Brian Staszenski is a veteran Canadian environmentalist who has used tactics ranging from the respectable (serving on government commissions and collaborating with corporations) to the militant (financing nonviolent civil-disobedience training for Alberta activists).

James “J.R.” Roof has been active in environmental and peace issues since the mid-1980s. A former member of the Senior Management (1996-2000) of Greenpeace International, JR oversaw the high-profile Ships and Direct Action Division, and International Campaign direction. James was a key instigator of Greenpeace’s Great Bear Rainforest Campaign in British Columbia in 1996-97. As a co-founder of The Ruckus Society in 1995-96, he was responsible for the creation of Ruckus Action Camps, and served as Board Chair of The Ruckus Society from 2000-2002.

Randy Hayes is the founder and President of Rainforest Action Network. He is currently a Program Director at International Forum on Globalization. He has served as Environmental Director for the cities of both San Francisco and Oakland. In these capacities, he pushed to actualize the promise of new economics based on sustainability.

If you watched the video, it’s amazing that these men and the group of extremist that they travel with speak as though they are native West Virginians. They believe they are representing the best interest of the communities that live in and around coal mining operations.

The address on Climate Ground Zero’s website to send donations is in Missoula, Montana. According to their website, “Climate Ground Zero is fiscally sponsored by Global Warming Solution Fund, a nonprofit 501 c (3) organization. All contributions to the Global Warming Solution Fund are tax-deductible.”

I am not an expert on non-profits in West Virginia, but should this organization be registered with the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office? I searched the West Virginia Secretary of State’s  Charities and Non-Profit section and could not find an organization registered as Climate Ground Zero or the Global Warming Solution Fund.

If someone can tell me if this organization is required to be registered with the West Virginia Secretary of State I am prepared to file a complaint with the the Secretary of State’s office. This organization is raising money from West Virginians and advertising that the contributions are tax exempt.

It’s time that extremist organization like Climate Ground Zero are held to the same standards as every other group involved in persuading public opinion on hot button issues.

I am tired of out-of-state environmentalists who come to West Virginia to protest at mining sites and claim to know what is in the best interest of West Virginians and local communities that are supported by the mining industry and the ancillary jobs the industry produces.
