Obama, EPA Deny Coal Permits

West Virginia MetroNews Talkline is reporting

Reports indicate the Environmental Protection Agency is preparing to deny permits for 79 pending surface mine permits. Twenty-three of those projects are in West Virginia.

Congratulations, Steven Adams, Best Political Reporter in W.Va.

Steven Adams, who runs West Virginia Watchdog and the West Virginia Examiner and also contributes to West Virginia Red, has been named best political reporter in the State of West Virginia by the Washington Post.

Adams has an op-ed in the Washington Examiner this morning about how leftist non-profit foundations, like the Rockefeller Family Fund, are working against coal mining families in West Virginia.

“Just 41% of voters nationwide now favor the health care reform proposed by President Obama and congressional Democrats. That’s down two points from a week ago and the lowest level of support yet measured.

Senator Clark Barnes to Challenge Mollohan

Clark BarnesAfter much speculation, Republican State Senator Clark Barnes confirmed in The Intelligencer this morning that he will challenge Democrat Congressman Alan Mollohan in West Virginia’s First Congressional District.

Barnes was re-elected last year to his second term in the West Virginia State Senate, where he serves as Senate Minority Whip for the Republican Caucus.  The announcement makes Barnes the fourth Republican candidate in the race to replace Mollohan.

Byrd’s Absence, 60 Votes, and Replacements

With the hospitalization of Senator Robert Byrd on Tuesday the number of Senate Democrats available to vote on a cloture motion in the U.S. Senate fell to fifty eight. As you may or may not know, the Senate needs 60 votes to end debate on any piece of legislation before it can be put up for a final vote. This vote is called a cloture motion and requires sixty votes to end debate.
