Already beaten in the West Virginia Democratic primary back in May, an embittered Rep. Alan Mollohan is lashing out at his political enemies, including the Democrat who defeated him, and appears to be plotting a potential comeback in 2012.
Mollohan already is making moves that suggest he wants a rematch.
In June, Mollohan filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission designating himself as a candidate for the House next cycle, according to a June 17 filing h the agency.
Mollohan has also begun raising money for that race. Based on his June 30 disclosure report with the FEC, Mollohan has raised more than $82,000 for the 2012 Democratic primary.
Those funds make up the bulk of the nearly $109,000 in cash that Mollohan’s reelection committee had in the bank as on June 30.

The Lexington Herald-Leader highlights that many folks associated with the coal industry are planning to spend big this election cycle to target anti-coal members of Congress. Those being targeted include Congressman Nick Rahall from West Virginia’s Third Congressional District.
“With the recent Supreme Court ruling, we are in a position to be able to take corporate positions that were not previously available in allowing our voices to be heard,” wrote Roger Nicholson, senior vice president and general counsel at International Coal Group of Scott Depot, W.Va., in an undated letter he sent to other coal companies.
“A number of coal industry representatives recently have been considering developing a 527 entity with the purpose of attempting to defeat anti-coal incumbents in select races, as well as elect pro-coal candidates running for certain open seats,” Nicholson wrote. “We’re requesting your consideration as to whether your company would be willing to meet to discuss a significant commitment to such an effort.”

The Republican Party in West Virginia has achieved some real milestones in recent years. I can still vividly remember the thrill of being present in 2000 for George W. Bush’s first visit as a candidate to the State Capitol lawn, with Secret Service snipers on the rooftops and 5,000 people coming in from everywhere.

Incumbent Democratic Congressman Alan Mollohan goes down to primary challenger Mike Oliverio in what is undoubtedly the biggest surprise from last night. The theme seemed to be anti-incumbent as several entrenched state senators in both political parties lost their nomination contest.
Democrat Mike Oliverio will face Republican David McKinley in the First Congressional. In the Third Congressional District, Elliott “Spike” Maynard won the Republican nomination and will face incumbent Congressman Nick Rahall this fall.
This is a short update from election night. Look for a more in-depth commentary later today or tomorrow as we look at all the results from last evening.
The contentious GOP Primary in West Virginia First Congressional District has been a 15 round fight to the finish among those seen as the leading contenders: former Ohio County Delegate and GOP Chairman David McKinley, former State Senator Sarah Minear, and Morgantown landlord Mac Warner.
