West Virginia Red first reported last week about Congressman Rahall and the Democrat National Committee (DNC) hosting a political event on the property of Health Right, a 501 (c)(3) registered non-profit. West Virginia Citizen Action Group posted a video of the event which includes Congressman Rahall’s speech on health care.

There has been much speculation on the political ambitions of Governor Joe Manchin upon completing his final term as governor.
West Virginia politicos and Charleston insiders often speak about the possibility of Manchin replacing Senator Byrd in Washington.
These conversations often bring up questions about who would be appointed to complete an open Byrd seat and if Manchin would resign and seek the seat himself if a vacancy occurred before the end of his term as governor.
The speculation about possible replacements grew more intriguing last week with the announcement that Nick Casey had been nominated to the federal bench for the Northern District of West Virginia.

The Beckley Register-Herald is reporting that Congressman Nick Rahall is defending the actions taken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) earlier this week in denying 79 mountaintop mining permits throughout Appalachia, which includes 23 in West Virginia.

With the hospitalization of Senator Robert Byrd on Tuesday the number of Senate Democrats available to vote on a cloture motion in the U.S. Senate fell to fifty eight. As you may or may not know, the Senate needs 60 votes to end debate on any piece of legislation before it can be put up for a final vote. This vote is called a cloture motion and requires sixty votes to end debate.
